”Non-Profits Can Be More Rewarding Than You Think”

Running a non-profit organization can be a very rewarding experience, but it can also be a very nerve-wracking experience. In my opinion, at college job fairs, graduating college students seem to overlook the number of non-profit jobs that are out there. Many graduating students automatically line up to work in the for-profit world with their eyes on a high salary and high power jobs in major companies. However, after a couple of months or years later, many college graduates will find their high paying jobs and high stress jobs unfulfilling and end up transitioning to other jobs. Not to mention company downsizing, layoffs, and companies going out of business.
The non-profit sector is always in need of highly talented, highly motivated, and intelligent young people. I think there is a misconception of non-profit jobs as low paying careers without the glamour and glitz of its private sector counterpart. However, careers in the non-profit can be very rewarding personally AND the monetary compensation/salaries are not as low as people think they are. In fact, non-profit administrators can set their own salaries as long as it is proportionate to the company’s overall budget amount. The salary is often set based on the non-profit’s overall operating budget for the year. Therefore, if a non-profit Executive Director oversees an organization that has an operating budget of $1 million or more, then I think the Executive Director can appropriately ask for monetary compensation that is in line with the operating budget.
Therefore, non-profit administrators’ salaries and compensations can fluctuate from modest salaries to multi-million dollar salaries. This is my opinion and I think that working for a non-profit provides many opportunities to positively change the world and be able to use all the gifts God has given you. Just imagine helping the world, being properly compensated for it, and enjoying the work that you do. I think that there are some pros to working or volunteering in the non-profit sector that working in the private sector may not bring.
